The Center for American Studies would like to invite you to participate in an interactive and certified Persuasive Legal Writing Masterclass led by Karen Lundquist (a law professor from the United States).

This Masterclass will allow you to master the art of persuasive legal writing, that is writing of, among others, complaints (and complaint answers), trial and appellate briefs, motions, and settlements.

You will first identify what are the characteristics of effective persuasive writing and how it differs from other types of legal writing, including predictive legal writing.

You will analyze the language, grammar, and syntax of a set of real-life legal documents and thus deepen your understanding of what makes a document persuasive both when it comes to presenting facts and applying law.

You will learn how to write persuasively using legal English in a clear, concise, and “tight” manner in order to better persuade the addressee of your legal document (court/judge or opposing party).

Finally, you will put that knowledge to use in practical exercises in which you will individually and in small groups analyze specific legal language and draft short passages applying concepts of effective legal writing.

The course takes place on June 21-22 (Friday & Saturday), 2024, via the intuitive Zoom platform.

Because the Persuasive Legal Writing Masterclass takes a 100% practical approach.

  • You will learn to create succinct and logical arguments in English.
  • You will learn advanced vocabulary as well as rules of syntax and grammar that you will use in your legal documents.
  • You will learn how to write documents (complaints, answers, trial and appelate briefs, motions, settlements) that accurately reflect your transactional and litigational goals.
  • You will learn practical tips and strategies for writing in clear, concise and “tight” legal English, thus tackling the biggest problem of all non-native English speakers.
